My thoughts on the @versustv Tour Tracker

Not having cable TV the Versus Tour Tracker is the best legal option available for me. I do have access to a Slingbox connected to a TV with Versus. However it only gets 300-400k streams, making action video very pixelated and hard to watch. After yesterday’s prologue it became evident I’d need to pony up the $30 if I wanted to enjoy this years Tour. Below is my good/bad of the Versus Tour Tracker.

Good

  • Picture quality surpassingly good in full screen on a 42” TV.
  • Start-to-finish video of stage.
  • Archived stage available on-demand.
  • No commercial breaks.

Bad

  • No background (crowd noise, helicopter or moto bike) sound is part of the stream. Without this audio it has a very subdued feel. Something that needs to be fixed.
  • Progress bar never disappears. Any main stream video site (ie. Hulu) has this simple feature. This would allow for complete full screen. Monday afternoon they swapped out the old Flash video player with the JW Player. Good move!
  • Nothing really exclusive. $30 is a bit expensive for what you get. $20 would be a fair price.
  • Without the Autobahn plug-in I couldn’t get the stream to start. I list this as a negative due to spending 30 minutes trying to figure out the problem. They don’t say a plug-in is required, but without it I couldn’t get it to work. Nice if they stated that this is required. It’s a free plug-in so it’s not a big deal. With the new Flash player the Autobahn plug-in is no longer needed. The email apology confirms

My setup:

  • Mac mini
  • 42” Sharp Aquos
  • Wireless-n router (802.11n)
  • Cable modem

Did you sign up for the Versus Tour Tracker what’s your thoughts?
