MLB still not a fan of Sling

Slinbox

Sling Hits, Misses With Pro Sports
With Sling Media last week announcing a partnership with the National Hockey League just days after a run-in with Major League Baseball over fans’ usage of the company’s device that lets TV viewers watch programs out of their homes, sports leagues must decide whether to fight or duck when it comes to technology that may threaten their business.

A lawyer familiar with sports broadcast rights told Mediaweek that the legality of Slingboxes is very much an open question. But that didn’t stop the NHL from inking a deal that lets Slingbox users record and share snippets of league games with other Web users via its forthcoming feature, Clip+Sling.

Critics say the NHL is far more desperate to make such deals than other leagues. TV ratings for the Stanley Cup finals were, in fact, abysmal.
