More details on Alton
I can’t stop thinking about Alton today. I did a Google search on “Alton Saceaux” and ran across a few other news reports and other people, like me, who have been touched by Alton’s outgoing personalty.
From blogger Kevin…
A good man is gone after being struck by a drunk driver last night on South Union rd. I have only met Alton Saceaux a handful of times but he was one of the nicest people if not the nicest person I have ever met. He was a well-known member of the Bakersfield Cycling community and well respected. It is a huge loss to not have him with us anymore. My deepest thoughts and well wishes go out to his family and friends.
The Bakersfield Observed blog writes
I didn’t know Alton well but did know him from the occasional ride (I am also a cyclist) and last saw him in Starbucks on California Avenue and Stockdale about a month ago. Alton was always - and I mean always - utterly upbeat and effervescent. The guy loved cycling and personal fitness was a his lifelong personal mission.
A little more detial on the incident
ABC23: Hit-And-Run Crash Kills Cyclist
A family member told ABC23 that Alton Saceaux, 56, and a friend were riding bikes on South Union Avenue north of Bear Mountain Blvd. around 8:30 p.m. Monday when Saceaux was struck by a Ford F-350 driving about 50 mph.
Douglas Kaiser, the driver, stopped when the other cyclist yelled to call 911, according to witnesses.
Witnesses said that’s when Kaiser got back in his truck and drove away.
Saceaux was airlifted to Kern Medical Center, where family members said he died around 11 p.m.
Kaiser later returned to the scene, where he was arrested on charges of gross vehicular homicide while intoxicated, DUI causing death, and hit-and-run causing death.
